On April 5, 2011 Smithsonian Folkways Recordings commemorated the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War – the “shots fired at Fort Sumter” – with the release of “Civil War Naval Songs,” a newly-recorded collection of period wartime ballads culled from the collections of many of America’s foremost museums and libraries. They are songs that bring to life the patriotic spirit and brave exploits of our nation's Civil War-era sailors
